Archive 008 — where five roads meet.

Before downtown Barrie had traffic lights, storefronts and summer crowds, there were survey lines, old roads and a small settlement growing around Kempenfelt Bay.

The Five Points took shape in the early 1800s as Mill Road, Bayfield Street, Dunlop Street and Clapperton Street came together at one unusually crooked crossing. What began as lines on a map became one of the city’s most familiar places—a landmark used for directions, a meeting point downtown and a daily piece of Barrie life.

For generations, people have passed through it on the way to work, shops, restaurants, the waterfront and home. In the summer of 1937, reports estimated that roughly 4,000 cars an hour moved through the intersection. Later came Barrie’s famously quick all-direction pedestrian crossing—another detail instantly familiar to anyone who has tried to make it across in time.

The streets and buildings around it have changed, but the intersection has remained unmistakably itself: uneven, busy, slightly awkward and deeply woven into the memory of downtown.

How to measure: Lay a similar shirt flat. Measure the body width one inch below the armhole, and measure the body length from the centre-back neckline seam to the bottom hem.
