Archive 011 - Lover's Creek
Before the subdivisions, there were mills.
At one time, four of them lined Lover’s Creek between Yonge Street and Kempenfelt Bay — using the little waterway that now slips quietly through Barrie’s south end as a source of power.
In 1862, a dam was built near Big Bay Point Road to create a reservoir for the Morse Mill downstream. A stone-lined raceway carried the water toward the mill — and traces of it can apparently still be found along the creek today.
The landscape changed. The mills disappeared. Barrie grew around it.
But the creek stayed.
A small piece of the old south end, running right through the new one.
